LESSON 8

REDIRECT GOOD CARBS BAD CARBS

Knowing the difference is the key to successful weight loss.

We live in a convenient world, but is it worth the cost?

WHAT'S A PERSON TO DO?

In Nutrition 101, we talked about how all foods have at least 1 of 3 macronutrients - protein, carbs or fat - and that fat is more than 2X as fattening as protein and carbs.

Most plants have all three macronutrients. Animals are all protein and fat.

In Processed Foods, we learned that processed carbs are fattening too.

But what are we supposed to do? Live on lettuce?

UNPROCESSED CARBS LEAD TO WEIGHT LOSS

Unrefined fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes are all high in carbs and mostly low in fat. That means they are all high in fiber and mostly low in calories. And that means we can eat till we're full and not gain weight!!!

ABOUT FIBER

Some types of carbohydrates are broken down in the blood stream and used as fuel. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is different. Rather than fuel us, it passes through us - performing some very important functions along the way. Fiber is critical for gut health and has been shown to prevent a wide variety of chronic diseases. It also keeps us regular. And yes, fiber also helps us lose weight. It not only fills us up with zero calories; it slows down digestion to keep us full longer. Fiber is a zero calorie miracle nutrient!
